COACHING IMPACT
– Coach Weiss’ contributions to basketball cannot be mentioned without the enormous role he has played in shaping the next generation of NBA players and coaches. Coach Weiss’ impact extends to Bill Walton, Scott Skiles, Doc Rivers, Spud Webb, Dominique Wilkins, Mark Jackson, Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Terry Stotts, Patrick Ewing, Ray Allen, and Kemba Walker.
AREA OF EXPERTISE/OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS
– Coach Weiss, who spent 1990-93 with the Atlanta Hawks (124-122 record, plus two playoff berths), is also the former head coach of San Antonio Spurs (1986-88), the Los Angeles Clippers (1993-94) and Seattle SuperSonics (2005-06). Altogether, he compiled a 223-299 mark in 522 contests over seven NBA seasons.
– In 2008, Coach Weiss went abroad to coach Shanxi Zhongyu in the Chinese Basketball Association, and was the subject of the book, “Brave Dragons, A Chinese Basketball Team, an American Coach and Two Cultures Clashing,” by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jim Yardley.
– As the 22nd overall pick in the 1965 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, Coach Weiss played 12 NBA seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Seattle SuperSonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Buffalo Braves and Washington Bullets, averaging 7.6 ppg in 783 regular season contests.
