Great work by Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press in highlighting the playing and coaching career of former NBA Head Coach Ray Scott, who in 1974, was the first African American to win the Coach of the Year Award. Coach Scott has since been joined by other top African American Coaches Don Chaney (1991), Lenny Wilkens (1994), Doc Rivers (2000), Avery Johnson (2006), Sam Mitchell (2007), Byron Scott (2008), Mike Brown (2009), and Dwane Casey (2018) to win the Award.
