SEAN SWEENEY
ORLANDO MAGIC HEAD COACH
Sean Sweeney is the Head Coach of the Orlando Magic. On June 1, 2026, Sweeney became the 16th Head Coach* in Magic history.
Prior to becoming the Head Coach of the Magic, Coach Sweeney was an Assistant Coach for the San Antonio Spurs under Coach Mitch Johnson (2025-2026), where he helped the team reach the NBA Finals. Prior to joining the Spurs, he was an Assistant Coach for the Dallas Mavericks under Coach Jason Kidd (2021-2025), where he helped the team reach an NBA Playoff Conference Finals appearance (2022) and an NBA Finals appearance (2024). Prior to joining the Mavericks, Coach Sweeney was an Assistant Coach for the Detroit Pistons under Head Coach Dwane Casey (2018-2021), where he helped the team reach an NBA Playoff berth (2019). Prior to joining the Pistons, he was an Assistant Coach for the Milwaukee Bucks under Head Coaches Jason Kidd (2014-2017) and Joe Prunty (2017-2018), where he helped the team reach three NBA Playoff berths (2015, 2017, 2018). Prior to joining the Bucks, he began his NBA career as an Assistant Coach (2013-2014) and Video Coordinator (2011-2013) with the Brooklyn Nets under Head Coaches Jason Kidd (2013-2014), Avery Johnson (2011-2012), and P.J. Carlesimo (2012-2013), where he helped the team reach an NBA Playoff berth (2013) and an NBA Conference Semifinals appearance (2014).
Sean Sweeney was born on June 3, 1984, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He attended and played at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay and the University of St. Thomas, where he received a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
