J.B. Bickerstaff
DETROIT PISTONS HEAD COACH
J.B Bickerstaff is the Head Coach of the Detroit Pistons. On July 3, 2024, Bickerstaff became the 38th Head Coach* in Pistons history.
Prior to joining the Pistons, Coach Bickerstaff was the Head Coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers (2020-2024), where he led the team to two consecutive NBA Playoff berths (2023 & 2024). He was also the Associate Head Coach under Head Coach John Beilein (2019-2020). Prior to joining the Cavaliers, he was the Head Coach of the Memphis Grizzlies (2017-2019), where he led the team to the third best scoring defense in the NBA (2019) and Assistant Coach under Head Coach David Fizdale (2016-2017), where he helped the team reach a 43-39 regular season record. Prior to joining the Grizzlies, Coach Bickerstaff was named the interim Head Coach for the Houston Rockets (2016), where he led the team to an NBA Playoff berth and was the Assistant Coach under Head Coach Kevin McHale (2011-2015), where he helped the team reach three consecutive NBA Playoff berths (2013, 2014, 2015), which includes an NBA Western Conference Finals appearance (2015). Prior to joining the Rockets, he was also an Assistant Coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves under Head Coaches Randy Wittman (2007-2008), Kevin McHale (2008-2009), and Kurt Rambis (2009-2011). Prior to joining the Timberwolves, Coach Bickerstaff was an Assistant Coach for the Charlotte Bobcats under Head Coach Bernie Bickerstaff (2004-2007).
J.B. Bickerstaff was born on March 10, 1979, in Denver, Colorado. He attended and played at Oregon State University, where he became the youngest NCAA Division 1 player as a 17-year-old freshman (1999) and later transferred to the University of Minnesota, where he received a bachelor’s degree in speech communications. During his time at the University of Minnesota he averaged 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds. Coach Bickerstaff is on the board of The Details Foundation, which aims to reduce social isolation, provide funding for research, and promote avenues for a healthier lifestyle.
